Fluid Ounces vs Weight Ounces: Why Soap Makers Weigh Everything

A fluid ounce measures volume. An ounce measures weight. They share a name, and that causes more failed batches than almost any other mix-up.

The two only match for water. Most oils weigh less than water, so a cup of olive oil weighs less than a cup of water. Glycerin weighs more. When a soap recipe calls for 16 oz of oil, it means 16 oz on a scale, not two cups in a measuring jug.

Rule of thumb: weigh every ingredient, including liquids. Lye calculations depend on exact oil weights, and measuring by volume can throw off your superfat enough to make a harsh or soft bar.

Volume to Weight for Common Ingredients

When a recipe only gives volume, use density to convert it to weight: grams = milliliters × density. The table below shows what one fluid ounce of common ingredients actually weighs. Fragrance oils vary from oil to oil, so check the product page or SDS for the specific oil you are using.

Approximate weight of 1 fluid ounce
Ingredient Density (g/ml) 1 fl oz weighs (g) 1 fl oz weighs (oz)
Distilled water 1.00[CONFIRM] 29.6 g 1.04 oz
Olive oil 0.91[CONFIRM] 26.9 g 0.95 oz
Coconut oil (melted) 0.92[CONFIRM] 27.2 g 0.96 oz
Vegetable glycerin 1.26[CONFIRM] 37.3 g 1.31 oz
Fragrance oil (typical; varies by oil) 0.95[CONFIRM] 28.1 g 0.99 oz

Densities are typical values at room temperature. Coconut oil is solid below about 76°F; weigh it solid or melted, the weight is the same.

Converting a Recipe to Percentages

Percentages make recipes portable. A lotion written as 3% fragrance works at 8 oz or 10 lb, and it keeps you inside recommended usage rates. To convert, divide each ingredient's weight by the total batch weight and multiply by 100.

The chart below shows how much additive to weigh for common usage rates at each base size, by weight. Need to work out a full formula? The Percentage Calculator does the math for every ingredient at once.

Conversion FAQ

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce by weight equals 28.35 grams (28.3495 g exactly). To convert, multiply ounces by 28.35. To go the other way, divide grams by 28.35, or multiply by 0.0353.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce by weight?

No. A fluid ounce measures volume (about 29.57 ml) and an ounce measures weight. They only line up for water. Oils are lighter than water and glycerin is heavier, so always weigh your ingredients for soap and cosmetic recipes.

How do I convert a soap recipe from ounces to grams?

Multiply every ingredient weight by 28.35, then round to the nearest gram (or tenth of a gram for small additives). Run the converted recipe back through a lye calculator to confirm your lye and water amounts before you make a batch.

How many ounces are in a 7 lb bag of soap base?

A 7 lb bag of soap base holds 112 ounces, which is about 3,175 grams (3.18 kg).
